Dr. Ryan Shugarman, M.D. is an adult psychiatrist / psychotherapist practicing in Alexandria, VA
(zip code 22314) and serving clients in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland.  Dr. Shugarman utilizes a combination of medication and psychotherapy (including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, trauma-focused, EMDR, exposure and response prevention, and supportive therapies) to effectively treat his patients.  He is board-certified in general and forensic psychiatry and is skilled in treating mental illness and a variety of psychiatric and mental health conditions in adults, including depression; bipolar disorder (manic depression); schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders; anxiety disorders (including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); substance use disorders / addiction; attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); and personality disorders.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Shugarman is a board-certified and fellowship-trained forensic psychiatrist who is available for psychiatric consultation and psychiatric expert witness services for both civil and criminal matters in VA, MD, Washington D.C., PA, and nationally.  He is experienced in performing the following types of forensic evaluations: assessment of competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, Bolton hearings, appropriateness for unconditional release, fitness for duty, consultative examinations for SSI / SSDI disability, independent medical evaluations (IME's), medical malpractice, stalking and violence risk assessment, need for guardianship, need for and appropriateness of civil commitment, and testamentary capacity.                                                                    
Dr. Shugarman obtained his doctorate in medicine from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, and completed his training as a general and forensic psychiatrist and therapist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine / Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, PA.  Licensed as a physician in Washington, DC, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the state of Maryland, Dr. Shugarman is also an active member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), American Medical Association (AMA), American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL), and Washington Psychiatric Society (WPS).                                                                 
In addition to his private practice, Dr. Shugarman is currently employed as a forensic psychiatrist and faculty member of Saint Elizabeths Hospital in the District of Columbia, where he treats patients; conducts court-ordered forensic psychiatric evaluations (e.g. competency to stand trial & criminal responsibility); teaches; and supervises training psychiatrists and forensic psychiatry fellows from Georgetown University and The National Capital Consortium / Walter Reed Army Medial Center.  Dr. Shugarman is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital and a faculty member of The National Capital Consortium Military Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
